While tea has been around for ages, the numerous benefits of drinking tea has only come to light in the past couple of years. As people have gotten more conscious of their health and started to drink and eat “correctly,” tea has added another reason to be part of each and every household.
Indian chai, which is being termed as the “Immunity and Wellness Tea” in some places, has been around for centuries. In India, there are many different ways of preparing this tea. This comes down to the number of different types of people who have diversity not just in religious beliefs, but also in the ways in which some of them prepare their tea. While Indians have always referred to any type of tea as ‘chai,’ this particular term has a different meaning in the western world. Here, it is more specifically meant to be a cup of tea with a combination of herbs and spices. This concoction is commonly known as ‘masala chai.’
As a general rule of thumb, the most common ingredient in Indian chai is milk. Depending on the region, the two most commonly used types of milk are attained from cows and buffalos. In a slightly less common scenario, even the milk from a yak is used. Often, this yak milk is used to make butter that gets added to the cup of tea. Newer preparations which are being aimed to make cups of tea for health reasons, include coconut and almond milk. Not everyone’s cup of tea though, as this is just for a niche group of ‘health aficionados.’
Among the other commonly used ingredients that can be found in cups or glasses of tea around India, are things like ginger, honey, cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper and cloves mostly. Some of the more recent additions are maple syrup, clove oil, coriander seeds and peppercorns. Some of the recipes for Indian immunity and wellness chai tea are given below.
- This type of preparation is best to be drunk by people suffering from fever or common cold/ cough.
- Ginger contains some properties that help in easing stomach problems.
- The heat which emanates from ginger helps to keep germs at bay while the honey (healthier option as opposed to sugar) helps against any sign of a sore throat.
To prepare this sort of tea, one would need the following:
- Grated ginger root (1 tsp)
- Honey (advised up to 1.5 tsp but no stopping someone with a real sweet tooth)
- Cloves and cinnamon could be added for not just extra flavour, but also for added health benefits.
All the ingredients need to be added to boiling water and then needs to blend in over the next couple of minutes. After about 10 to 15 minutes, when all the contents have been well steeped, it is time to pour yourself a cup of tea loaded with health benefits.
Lemon and pepper tea
- Another cup of tea which is good for immunity as it is said to be one of the best sources for ‘detoxing’ the system.
- Another one of the major benefits of lemon and pepper tea is that it acts as a relaxant for arthritis patients and joint pains in particular.
The ingredients of this sort of tea would be:
- Lemon juice (1 pc)
- Honey (as advised)
- Pepper (¼ tsp)
- Turmeric (½ tsp) can also be added to this sort of mixture.
If using turmeric, then place along with the pepper before pouring the boiling water into the cup. The lemon juice and honey are to be added last, stirred well enough and then drunk.
Ashwagandha (Indian ginseng/ winter cherry/ poison gooseberry) Tea
- In India, this is considered to be one of the natural stars for stabilizing blood sugar levels.
- It is also known to reduce anxiety levels and alleviate stress.
There are only 2 items to be added to this cup of tea
- Ashwagandha root (dried and approximately 5 inches at least)
- Honey (as advised)
The root needs to be washed well before it is added to the water and boiled for between 15-20 minutes. Adding the honey is the last thing to do before sipping on a unique preparation of tea.
Tulsi (Holy basil) Tea
- Tulsi is believed to help with blood sugar balancing.
- One of the best natural remedies to fight germs and increase immunity.
- It is also known to fix a number of skin problems.
The things that go into this cup of tea are:
- Basil (¼ cup)
- Lemon juice (2 tsp)
- Honey (as advised)
Allow the basil to be added to water before starting to boil. After reaching boiling point, allow the mixture to simmer over a low flame for about 15 minutes before adding lemon/ honey and drinking.
These preparations of tea are loaded with health benefits and also help people increase their immunity- hence why it is probably known as the Indian immunity and wellness chai tea.
